Originally a collection of beach cottages, an ancient gas station and a market, desirable Balboa Island is a tight-knit community of neighbors, old and new. Streets are named after gemstones and water themes. Even as older cottages give way to newer homes, the island’s two and a half miles of continuous sidewalks allow pedestrians to enjoy bay views and ocean views to visitors and inhabitants alike. Marine Street’s collection of boutiques and trinket shops host the island’s most famous gastronomic contribution, the Balboa Bar — an iconic chocolate-dipped ice cream bar on a stick, rolled in candy. Living on Balboa Island is like Mayberry surrounded by the Newport Harbor and Beacon Bay.
